The Leapfrog Group

Giant Leaps for Patient Safety

2025

MBGH serves as the Illinois Regional Leader for The Leapfrog Group, a national employer-driven patient safety organization. In this role, MBGH encourages Illinois hospitals to participate in the Leapfrog Group’s annual online Hospital Survey and the ASC Survey.

Background

Since 2000, Leapfrog has served as America's voice for patient safety, quality and transparency. Founded by large employers and other purchasers, The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization driving a movement for giant leaps forward in the quality and safety of American health care. The Leapfrog Hospital and Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) Surveys collect and transparently report hospital and ASC performance, empowering purchasers to find the highest-value care and giving consumers lifesaving-information they need to make informed decisions. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, Leapfrog’s other main initiative, assigns letter grades to hospitals based on their record of patient safety, helping consumers protect themselves and their families from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.

The Leapfrog Lives and Dollars Lost Calculator

Business Case for Employers

MBGH Webinar Recording: This webinar featured Leah Binder, CEO of The Leapfrog Group and Rosemary Sams, Senior Manager of Benefits at Univar Solutions. Leah highlighted Leapfrog’s commitment to improving patient safety, quality, and transparency in hospitals nationwide. Rosemary described how her organization used Leapfrog’s free Lives and Dollars Lost Employer Risk Calculator to evaluate hospital performance and quantify the cost of medical errors. Using this award-winning tool, Univar estimated the percentage of employees treated at hospitals with varying safety grades, avoidable deaths, hidden surcharges, and total expenditures tied to medical mistakes.

This no cost calculator provides employers and other purchasers with:

  • The number of avoidable deaths among covered lives.
  • Hidden surcharges paid for each inpatient admission due to medical errors.
  • The percent of total health care expenditures spent on medical mistakes.
  • The likelihood of avoidable harm by race and ethnicity.

Outcomes

National and regional health plans use Leapfrog Hospital Survey results to power decision-support tools for their members, and regional coalitions use the data to activate their communities around safety and quality. Hospital and ASC Survey results are also used in the calculation of Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, and as the basis for value-based purchasing strategies.

The Leapfrog Hospital Survey results are used additionally by other entities in several ways:

  • To recognize the highest performing hospitals as Leapfrog Top Hospitals.
  • To help health plans identify high-value care through the Leapfrog Value-Based Purchasing Program.
  • To help employers and purchasers identify the best facilities for their employees’ health care needs and work with health plans to design benefits packages that steer employees towards the safest and highest quality hospitals.
  • To aid employees and health plan members in choosing a hospital by including Leapfrog data on plan websites and materials as well as in transparency tools.
  • To protect mothers and babies from needless harm - Leapfrog’s groundbreaking reporting sparked a movement that led to the reduction of Early Elective Delivery rates by 84% nationwide.
